Data Article and info-graphic/visual content I created:

Are you a burlesque artist looking to promote yourself? Or someone selling burlesque-related merchandise or promoting burlesque events? Do you want to find out more about  burlesque’s popularity, market and where to advertise? Or are you just a burlesque fan wanting to find more content and videos? Whatever your interest in burlesque -this article will help you.

If you’re a burlesque-enthusiast, it will let you know where you can find more interesting burlesque content online -as well as other burlesque fans. If you’re selling burlesque products online -(such as DVD’s or costumes)- it will help you know which countries have the most interest in burlesque (and so which are more likely to buy). It will also guide you to popular web pages on which you can advertise products. If you’re a passionate performer, or viewer of burlesque, this article will help you learn where there are thriving burlesque communities and where you can promote yourself or tour. This article will tell you the most visited burlesque pages on facebook, how global interest in burlesque is divided (by countries) and much more. It will also suggesting new research methods to acquire even more useful data! Few people like data but most people like pursuing their interests and achieving their aims and dreams. The data in this article helps you to do that! I’ve done the research so you don’t have to. Soon you’ll know where to go to find buyers, audience members, like-minded individuals and/or great content, merchandise and shows..!

Let’s start with the basics. The name ‘Burlesque’ has a web popularity of 40,700,000 pages. More specifically it has a:

  •   Facebook presence of 1,130,000 pages.
  •   Google+ presence of 10,500 pages.
  •   Linkedin presence of 19,100 pages.
  •   Twitter presence of 110,000 pages.

(Statistics taken from http://www.name-list.net/facebook/surname/Burlesque ). Don’t like figures? I’ve created an original infographic especially for those of you who prefer visuals…the infographic shows the percentages associated with each type of web presence…

Originally-created infographic -Burlesque on the web:

So we’ve established that Facebook has the largest burlesque web presence. I think you’ll agree that it therefore makes sense to focus on burlesque and Facebook, (rather than burlesque and LinkedIn, Google+ or Twitter) during this article. The most obvious question that springs to my mind is…

What is the most popular burlesque Facebook page?

Personally, I thought it would probably be a fan page for the film ‘Burlesque‘. It’s not.

Hmm -any thoughts?

Well I wouldn’t have guessed it so I won’t tease you any longer -the most popular Burlesque Facebook page is the Facebook page of 21st Century Burlesque -it’s called ‘Burlesque Online’ and here’s the link to it:

https://www.facebook.com/BurlesqueOnline?fref=ts

It’s the facebook page for ’21st Century Burlesque Magazine’ and the website link for this magazine is:

Whilst the Facebook page is updated regularly and definitely worth checking out and subscribing to -there’s not a huge amount on the website. The website does however have a useful burlesque festival website link (I’ll pass it on here to save you the cyber trip –www.burlesquefest.com ) and they occasionally print an annual magazine version as well as listing yearly results for the ‘Burlesque Top Fifty’. The Top Fifty competition sounds fun and is a great way of supporting your favourite burlesque artists. Here’s how they describe it…

“Every year, thousands of people all over the world nominate the people who they feel have made the biggest contribution to burlesque during the year by inspiring, achieving, educating, documenting, pioneering, entertaining, innovating, producing, leading or creating. It is a light-hearted, celebratory poll which brings the global burlesque community together for a bit of fun and to share our achievements at the end of each year. You can nominate people from now until midnight GMT on December 25th, and the results will be announced at New Year” (http://21stcenturyburlesque.com/the-burlesque-top-50-2013/ )”.

Anyway -back to Burlesque Online‘ -the most popular burlesque Facebook page.  Latest figures (March 2014) show that it has 121,935 fans and 1,497 people talking about it. (Statistics are taken from: http://www.socialbakers.com/facebook-pages/258987521128-burlesque). If you’re one of the people who want to advertise (something burlesque-related) online -you probably want more detail. Don’t worry -I won’t let you down… most of it’s fans are from the United States (38,213 fans forming 31.3% of the fan base), followed by Italy (15,714 forming 12.9%), the United Kingdom (12,361 forming 10.1%), Germany (6,183 forming 5.1%) and Brazil (4,777 forming 3.9%). Other, and not yet targeted countries, have a total of 44,687 fans and account for 36.6% of the fan base.

These figures are not, however, static and the popularity of the ‘Burlesque Online’ facebook page is growing steadily so the figures will probably have changed slightly by the time you read this. You can check out any new, updated statistics here:

Perhaps you’ll also join their fan base (and, no, I’m not involved in promoting them in any way and only discovered them myself)! Their growing number of global fans is clearly shown in the graph below (figures from Feb 12th and March 13th 2014)…

Analysis, comparisons and challenge!

Now for the second memory test -do you remember any of the results when we looked at the proportional representation of countries’ interest in the ‘Burlesque Online’ Facebook page? If you do, you’ll recall that Italy, the UK, Germany and Brazil took second, third, fourth and fifth places. To compare – those countries don’t even feature on this global pie chart. The USA does -however not as predominantly as before (when it came first in the list of countries most interested in the ‘Burlesque Online’ Facebook page).

In contrast, globally, Russia demonstrates the most interest in ‘burlesque’ across the web -followed by a fairly equal interest between Australia, Spain and the USA (other countries form a mere slither).

So what are the popular Russian burlesque Facebook pages or websites? I’ll leave that to you to find out. If you sell burlesque-related products online -it’s worth doing some more research in order to uncover more market trends.

Even if you’re not selling anything this information could be of use -after all burlesque videos can be watched and understood whatever language you speak so you could still promote yourself as a burlesque artist, or watch new content, by experimenting with entering different languages’ version of the word ‘burlesque’ into google. Also try different countries’ versions of google so, for example, instead of google.com or google.co.uk you could try google.ru for content associated with Russia. Also don’t forget google translate which may prove very useful… https://translate.google.com/

Here are a few translations of the word ‘burlesque’ to get you started:
